6.9.3 Hangfire (see 4.3.2.9). The primer should function without hang fire in excess of 1
second. During firing, a hang-fire malfunction may occur leading to inadvertent injury or
potential death of troops from unexpected recoil of breech.
6.9.4 Fragments (see 4.3.2.9). Fragmentation of case or primer exiting the gun in excess
of 300 feet of the muzzle may lead to inadvertent injury or potential death of troops.
6.10 Supersession data. This specification supersedes MIL-C-46229C (AR) dated 29 June
1979 and amendment 3 of MIL-C-46229C (AR) dated 17 January 2001.
6.11 Changes from previous issue. Marginal notations are not used in this revision to
identify changes with respect to the previous issue due to the extent of the changes.
6.12 Definitions.
a. Acceptance Inspection Equipment (AIE). Any measuring device that is traceable to the
national or international standard which is used to assure conformance of material to the contract
requirements.
b. Automated Acceptance Inspection Equipment (AAIE). Equipment for which no, or
minimal, human involvement is required in the acceptance determination. This includes
equipment employing probes/sensors/transducers that are automatically manipulated to perform
measuring and detection functions.
c. Hangfire. A hangfire is a delay in the functioning of a propelling charge at the time of
firing or lanyard pull.
d. Misfire. A misfire is a complete failure to fire and may be due to a faulty firing
mechanism or faulty element in the propelling charge explosive train.
